Quick answer
A competitive MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship is a joint design between the researcher and the host. The proposal needs a strong research project, but it also needs a credible explanation of why the mobility, supervision, training, knowledge transfer and host environment create a meaningful next step in the researcher's career.
For 2026, applicants need a PhD by the call deadline or to have successfully defended the thesis, normally have no more than eight years of research experience from the PhD award date under the detailed rules, and satisfy the mobility rule. The 2026 call closed on 9 September 2026 and received 21,627 proposals.

Treat the fellowship as a trajectory, not only a project
The easiest way to make an MSCA PF proposal generic is to write an excellent research plan first and add training, supervision, mobility and impact afterwards. The application then reads as a research project with administrative attachments.
A stronger design starts by asking what scientific and professional transition the fellowship is supposed to create.
The central logic is:
current expertise -> new environment -> new capabilities -> research result -> stronger scientific independence and career options
That sequence should be visible throughout the proposal.
The research still has to be ambitious
MSCA is career-focused, but scientific quality remains central. The project should have a clear research objective, a credible state-of-the-art gap and a methodology capable of producing a meaningful advance.
The level of ambition is different from ERC. A PF does not need to establish a five-year independent research group. It should, however, show why the project is more than routine continuation of the applicant's previous work.
A useful question is:
What will the researcher be able to understand, do or lead after this fellowship that they could not credibly do before it?
If the answer is only “publish more papers”, the proposal is probably underdeveloped.
Host choice should be scientifically necessary
A prestigious host is not enough. The proposal should make the host useful.
The strongest host logic usually contains three layers:
- Scientific capability: expertise, facilities, data, methods or networks required by the project.
- Training capability: concrete knowledge the researcher will acquire.
- Career capability: exposure, responsibility, sectoral experience or networks that expand future options.
The host-supervisor relationship should therefore be visible in the scientific design. If the same project could be carried out equally well at almost any institution, the mobility argument becomes weak.
Two-way knowledge transfer must be real
MSCA PF is not only about what the researcher receives. The host should gain something as well.
A strong two-way transfer statement is specific:
- the researcher brings method A, dataset B, domain expertise C or an external network;
- the host contributes method D, infrastructure E or expertise F;
- the project forces these capabilities to interact;
- both sides retain new capacity after the fellowship.
Generic statements such as “the researcher will transfer knowledge to the host through seminars” rarely explain why the collaboration matters.
Build Excellence as one argument
The Excellence section brings together research objectives, methodology, supervision, training, knowledge transfer and the applicant's profile. These elements should reinforce one another.
The research question determines which methods are needed. Those methods determine what training is necessary. The training explains why this host and supervisor are appropriate. The applicant's previous experience shows what they contribute and why the proposed step is credible.
That integration is the real structure of the section.

Impact begins with the researcher's future capability
MSCA explicitly evaluates career perspectives and employability. That does not mean writing vague statements about becoming a better researcher.
Define capabilities.
For example:
- independent project design;
- a new experimental or computational technique;
- supervision or leadership experience;
- industrial exposure;
- IP and exploitation knowledge;
- interdisciplinary competence;
- access to a scientific network that supports the next career stage.
Then explain how the fellowship creates those capabilities and where they can be used afterwards.
The wider scientific, societal and economic impact should follow the research logic rather than being attached as a generic list of benefits.

The mobility rule should be checked before writing
For European Postdoctoral Fellowships, the researcher must normally not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of the beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline. For Global Postdoctoral Fellowships, the rule applies to the host organisation for the outgoing phase.
There are also detailed rules on the maximum eight years of research experience after the PhD and periods that do not count towards that limit.
Eligibility calculations should be completed early. They are not something to infer informally from nationality or current employment.

Preliminary work should support the project without making it look finished
A PF can contain preliminary results, but they should have a purpose. Useful evidence may establish access to a system, feasibility of a measurement, the existence of a scientific effect or the applicant's ability to execute a key method.
The proposal still needs a genuine research question. Too much evidence can make the fellowship look like funding to complete work whose main answer is already known.
Implementation should be proportionate
The work plan needs enough detail to show that the project can be delivered, but it should remain subordinate to the scientific logic.
A clean structure often includes:
- a small number of research work packages;
- explicit training and knowledge-transfer activities;
- secondment or non-academic placement where it has a clear function;
- milestones that correspond to decisions or scientific progress;
- realistic risks with alternative routes.
The timeline should help an evaluator understand the sequence of learning and research, not simply show a dense Gantt chart.

Final proposal test
Before submission, I would ask:
- Is the scientific question clear in the first page?
- Is the project a meaningful step beyond the researcher's current profile?
- Is the host necessary rather than merely prestigious?
- Is two-way knowledge transfer specific?
- Does the training plan solve identifiable capability gaps?
- Can the evaluator see the researcher's trajectory after the fellowship?
- Do the impact claims follow from the project rather than from generic policy language?
- Does the implementation plan preserve enough flexibility for research uncertainty?
A strong PF proposal should make the fellowship feel inevitable: the project, person, host and timing fit together.
